A senior BNP leader says there will be no option left other than ousting the Hasina-led government if a non-party government is not installed.
BNP leader ASM Hannan Shah said no fair election was possible without a non-party caretaker that the Opposition is asking for — and if the government overlooked it and went ahead with their plans to hold polls, the Opposition will have to bring down the government.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going ahead with the formation of her proposed ‘all-party’ caretaker government to supervise the next election.
Opposition BNP-led 18-Party alliance, on the other hand, opposes it saying it will deny a level-playing field for other parties and demands installation of a non-party caretaker government to conduct the elections.
Hasina-led government had scrapped the non-party caretaker government provision though a Constitutional amendment despite strong opposition from the BNP-led alliance.
The Opposition insists on restoration of the caretaker government provision arguing that it will ensure free and fair elections without being biased towards any particular political party.
“It hardly matters whether the poll-time government is an all-party or a multi-party dispensation. It has to be non-party,” the BNP leader ASM Hannan Shah said at a discussion organised by the All Community Forum at the National Press Club on Friday
“Otherwise, ousting the government will be the only way left to overcome the crisis.”
“We are very specific in our demand. No election under the current Prime Minister (Sheikh Hasina),” he added.
“There is still time to resolve the crisis – an hour is enough for the government to set things right,” Hannan Shah, a BNP Standing Committee member, said.
He called on the government to reinstate the non-party caretaker system in the Constitution without wasting time.
The BNP Standing Committee member also criticised Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad for making contradictory statements.
