Opposition conspiring to foil polls: Suranjit

Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Tuesday accused the main opposition BNP and some other parties of conspiring to foil the next national election.

“Some political parties, including BNP, are hatching a conspiracy to thwart the next general election, but they won’t be successful in their bid,” he said.

Suranjit, also an Awami League advisory council member, brought the allegation while addressing a discussion arranged by Nauka Samarthak Ghosthi, a pro-ruling party body, at the Jatiya Press Club.

Mentioning that Awami League believes in democracy, he said his party will hand over power through an election, not by any other means.

“Awami League had never held any one-sided election and won’t do so in the future either. Those telling that the government is trying to hold a lopsided election are spreading falsehood,” the minister added.

About the opposition’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government system, Suranjit said the election will be held as per the constitution. “There’s still time for dialogue on holding the election as per the constitution.”

He also called upon the opposition to reach a compromise with the government over the election in a peaceful manner shunning the path of violence.

The veteran AL leader also hoped that the opposition BNP will finally participate in the national election for the sake of democracy shunning its negative politics.
