A senior Awami League leader has claimed agitations by the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami hindered execution of Sheikh Hasina government’s development plans during the 2009-13 term.
Taking part in a budget discussion on Monday, Deputy Leader of Parliament Sayeda Sajeda Chowdhury said, “Those who don’t want Bangladesh’s development run smear campaign against the country abroad.
“We had to tackle it throughout the last year and because of that the desired development goal could not be reached.”

Chowdhury claimed Jamaat’s acts of violence over the war crimes verdicts thwarted development works.
Six former and current Jamaat leaders have so far been convicted of war crimes. Party chief Motiur Rahman Nizami’s verdict is due on Tuesday.
In 2013, Jamaat activists ran amok over the verdicts. Hardline Islamist group Hifazat-e Islam, too, wreaked havoc in the capital in May last year.
The end of the year was marked by continuous blockades and shutdowns across Bangladesh by the BNP-led alliance demanding a non-party government’s supervision in the polls.
However, BNP’s boycott of the Jan 5 polls ensured a landslide for the Awami League. Currently, the BNP does not have any representation in Parliament.
