Five members of a family have been critically injured in a fire originated from a gas burner at a house in Dhaka’s Uttara.
According to the fire service, the incident happened on a top floor apartment of a six-storied building at Uttara Sector-13 on Friday morning.
The injured have been identified as Md Shahnewaz, 50, his wife Sumaia Akter, 40, and their sons ‘Shahalin’, 15, ‘ Jarif’, 11, and one-and-a-half-year-old ‘Jaran’.
An official at the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room said a team of fire-fighters had rushed to the spot on hearing about the fire and brought it under control immediately.
He said the injured had been taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The inspector at DMCH police post said Shahnewaz suffered severe burns to 95 percent of his body, Akter sustained 90 percent burns and their two sons 70 percent.
According to police, only Jarif is out of danger.
A neighbour of the family, Abul Hasnat, who rushed them to hospital, told police that they had heard a loud bang in the apartment when the fire broke out.
Fire service officials said there might have been a fault in the gas burner or pipeline, from where gas leaked and filled the entire kitchen.
The fire broke out when someone from the family tried to ignite the burner.
Police said Shahnewaz is an employee at the US embassy in Dhaka.
