One killed in AL factional clash in Comilla

A Juba League activist was killed and 15 others were injured in factional clashes in the ruling Awami League at Titas upazila in Comilla on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Rezaul Karim Sentu, 42, of Kalakandi village of the upazila, the police said.
The incident took place a day after a Chhatra League activist was killed and 20 others, including the university proctor, injured in gunfight between two groups of the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation at the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet on Thursday.
New Age correspondent in Comilla reported the clashes erupted following longstanding rivalry between two groups of Awami League at Kalakandi union over establishing supremacy in the area.
Local people said that Kalakandi union Awami League president Habibullah Bahar and Juba League leader Ibrahim Khalil were in long standing rivalry.
Their associates and followers even locked in clashes frequently over the enmity. A month earlier, they also locked in a clash and vandalised shops at Kalakandi Market, said the police.
On Friday morning, the activists of two groups locked in altercation resulting into the clashes.
The associates of Habibullah assaulted an activist of Ibrahim group and threatened to not to come to the market, locals said.
Around 150 followers of the both the groups then locked into clashes with sticks, spears, harpoon and other local weapons for over two hours from 9:30am, said the police.
At one stage Rezaul, an associate of former union unit president Ibrahim, was hit by harpoon in the chest and died on spot, said Titas police officer in charge Tarek Mohammad Abdul Hannan.
Rezaul was merely victim of the incident and got killed as he was from Ibrahim’s village, said the police.
At least 15 others also sustained injuries during the clashes. Two of them were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
The police fired 30 blank shots to bring the situation under control.
The police officer said that they detained four people immediately after the incident and continued raids for arresting the other people involved in  the clashes.
Earlier on Thursday Shahjalal University of Science and Technology was closed for an indefinite period Chhatra League activist Suman Chandra Das, 23, also a business administration student of a private university, was killed in gunfights between two groups of Chhatra League.
A number of students and Chhatra League men were shot at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University on the same day in a factional clash of Chhatra League.
Another person was killed in a factional clash of Awami League at Nandail of Mymenshingh on the same day.
