Terming the January-5 election a ‘farcical’ one, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmad on Friday demanded the government arrange fresh parliamentary polls.
“Arrange a new national election immediately. Otherwise, people won’t sit idle … they’ll ensure your fall as they have their backs against the wall,” he said.
The LDP, a component of the BNP-led 19-party alliance, organised the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club.
Mentioning that the country’s people did not accept the stage-managed January-5 election, Oli said the current regime came to power using muscle power and they are now dreaming to hang onto power till 2041.
Accusing the ruling party MPs of amassing wealth illegally, the LDP chief said the present MPs are corrupt. “If the government is sincere and the Election Commission is honest, they will make public the wealth statement of the MPs.”
Pointing at Jatiya Party, he said the domestic opposition party can never be called true opposition.
The LDP President said the 19 parties never believe in violence. “We want an acceptable solution to the current crisis through negotiation. But the government is not providing opposition any political space. It’s trying to suppress the opposition resorting to repressive acts.”
Engineer Kamal Uddin Mostafa presided over the discussion addressed, among others, by LDP senior joint convener Sadat Ahmed, joint convener Dr Jahirul Islam and Dhaka city unit LDP president Khaled Saifullah.
