Helal Uddin, a former officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilgaon police station, wanted to reach an out of court settlement with the Dhaka University student, Abdul Kader, before the court verdict.
The police officer has since been sentenced to three years in prison for torturing Kader in 2011.
Kader, now a civil servant, was offered a large sum of money in exchange for settling out of court, but he refused.
“A few people from OC Helal came to my office the day before the verdict. I did not even go to court on that day as I could have been pressured by powerful quarters [for a settlement],” Abdul Kader told Prothom Alo on Wednesday.
A relative of the OC, who tried to settle the matter, admitted to the move for settlement.
“I went to Kader to persuade him to settle the matter on humanitarian grounds. I also offered four to five lakh taka, but in vain,” the person said, requesting anonymity.
However, Kader said he refused to settle the matter as many people were now involved.
“I can’t forget what I suffered that day,” Kader said, to those who came to settle the matter.
On Sunday, the court gave OC Helal three years’ imprisonment. The court also issued an arrest warrant for him.
On 15 July, 2011, the OC picked up Abdul Kader from the Segunbagicha area in Dhaka city when he was returning to his dormitory at Dhaka University.
The police officer tortured Kader with a machete and later filed a number of trumped up cases of robbery and possession of arms, against Kader.
A relative said OC Helal is now in the country and that he may surrender before the court.
