The rejoinder comes after the publishing of a report titled ‘NYT publishes wrong Bangladesh photo’ in the online version of the Dhaka Tribune on Monday
Leading US newspaper The New York Times has published a rejoinder on its article regarding Bangladesh, where a photo had mistakenly been inserted.
The newspaper has also removed the photo and its caption from the article titled “Matriarchs’ Duel for Power Threatens to Tilt Bangladesh Off Balance”, published on January 11.
The rejoinder came after the publishing of a report titled ‘NYT publishes wrong Bangladesh photo’ in the online version of the Dhaka Tribune on Monday.
The rejoinder says: “A picture with an earlier version of this article was published in error. The people shown included members of the secular Shahbagh movement who were condemning violence by opposition activists in Bangladesh; they were not expressing support for the strike by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party that was the subject of the article.”
On January 8, a number of political and socio-cultural organizations formed a human chain in front of the National Museum in the capital city of Dhaka in protest of attacks on Hindu communities across the country during the January 5 polls. The image of the event was published in Bangladeshi newspapers on January 9.
The New York Times published a photo of the anti-communal protest rally on January 11. The photo published by the NYT was distributed by USA-based news agency The Associated Press. Publishing the photo in the story titled “Matriarchs’ Duel for Power Threatens to Tilt Bangladesh Off Balance”, the NYT put a wrong caption on it.
The caption in the NYT story read: “Bangladeshis protested Wednesday in Dhaka during a strike called by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.”
It is notable that the main opposition BNP called a 48-hour nationwide hartal on Sunday, beginning on Monday morning. Later on Tuesday, the programme was extended till 6pm on Wednesday (January 8). The anti-communal rally also took place on January 8.
The image that was used in the New York Times claimed to depict the BNP protest rally, while it actually was an image of a rally protesting attacks on the minorities in Bangladesh.
