Jamaat-e-Islami has come out in the open demanding cancellation of the quota system in government jobs, a day after the BNP asked the government to abolish it.
Acting Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan in a statement on Friday said the mediocre leaders and activists of Awami League, Juba League and Chhatra League were using this quota system to get jobs in top posts in the administration.
He said, “This quota system is in effect only to make the administration partisan. This is making the administration eventually meritless as real talented students are not getting the chance to join the administration. That’s why the administration’s skill and efficiency is decreasing.”
“The jobs should be given based on merit by annulling the quota system,” said the party that opposed Bangladesh’s independence.
The statement also mentioned the attacks by police and Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on the protesters demanding annulment of the system as unexpected and sad.
Some organisations have blamed Jamaat and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir for orchestrating the violent agitation against quotas also reserved for freedom fighters and their children.
A group of candidates who failed to clear 34th BCS preliminary examinations had blocked the Shahbagh intersection on Wednesday, causing severe traffic gridlocks in the capital.
To quell the protest, the PSC on Wednesday had announced that the results would be reviewed.
But the agitating students were not pacified by the announcement as they demanded that entire quota system be abolished.
However, the demonstrations continued on Thursday and spread to several universities in the country.
At least 20 people were injured on Thursday when the job-seekers fought pitched battles with police at Dhaka University and Shahbagh.
The Vice Chancellor’s residence and office, Proctor’s office, Social Sciences building and several other areas were attacked and vandalised.
Stuff used during the colourful procession ‘Mongol Shobhajatra’ or parade wishing good fortune celebrating Bengali new year ‘Pahela Boishakh’ were burned.
They attacked the media and damaged scores of vehicles.
