The government is not concerned about the BNP’s threats of mass uprising, but about the plans of some international militant organisations to expand their network into Bangladesh, a minister has said.
Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader spoke to reporters after inaugurating a foot over bridge at Savar on Monday.
“The people do not believe BNP will be able to build up a momentum to unseat the government any time soon. Therefore the government has not paid heed to BNP’s call for uprising,” he said.
But the government is concerned about al-Qaeda’s reported plan to expand its network to Bangladesh and the subcontinent, he remarked.
“Some international extremist groups are trying to expand their network into South Asia. Bangladesh is among their targets. We’re thinking about ways to thwart them,” he said.
The minister said road repairs and all other necessary arrangements to handle the home-going rush for Eid and Puja were complete.
“Remaining works will be finished before the vacations begin,” he added.
