‘No one will select the leadership, the councillors will elect their future leaders whoever they want…I urge you to elect those who will be able to provide right leadership—brilliant and regular students,’ she said, reports United News of Bangladesh.
The prime minister was inaugurating a two-day council of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student associate body of the ruling Awami League and oldest student organisation of this subcontinent, at historic Suhrawardy Udyan.
Hasina said, ‘Our independence came based on an ideology…so the Liberation War spirit, education and sacrifice have to be adopted by future leaders.’
Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League President, said each and every Chhatra League leader and activist has to grow up with the ideal encompassing education, peace and prosper, and that would be the Chhatra League ideal.
‘Chhatra League [members] must remember study should always come first…You have to pay attention to yours study first, this is how while electing leadership you should elect those who are meritorious, regular students and attentive to study who will be able to give appropriate leadership to it,’ she said adding that education is the only way to build a poverty-free nation.
The Awami League chief termed Chhatra League a historic organisation of this subcontinent which is related with every democratic movement of the country. ‘So, the image of this organisation should not be tarnished in any way.’
Talking about Chhatra League’s next leadership, Hasina said the leadership would come through an election with transparent ballot boxes introduced by this organisation first in the country.
About the 27-year age limit for the Chhatra League leaders, she said as the council could not be held in due time the age limit should be 29 years. ‘But you must stick to it — 29 years,’ she said.
The last council of the Chhatra League was held on July 2011.
The prime minister said the Chhatra League council could not be held in due time because of movements by some political parties in the name of foiling election in 2013 that lasted for one year and also for a three-month anti-government movement in 2014-15.
At that time, she said, the administration and law-enforcement agencies were engaged in maintaining the law and order situation and protecting the public life and property. ‘Activists and leaders of our organisations also played their role in protecting the lives and property of the common people.’
To do that, Hasina said, many leaders and activists of Chhatra League and Juba League were killed in their hands.
Held with Chhatra League president HM Badiuzzaman Sohag in the chair, the council was addressed, among others, by commerce minister and former Chhatra League president Tofail Ahmed, AL general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and road transport and bridges minister and former Chhatra League president Obaidul Quader.
Chhatra League general secretary Siddique Nazmul Alam read out the organisation’ s report while office secretary Sheikh Rassel placed the condolence proposal.
Earlier in the morning, the prime minister hoisted the national flag with the national anthem being played, while the Chhatra League president hoisted the organisation flag.
