Urging their party followers not to be upset over the bragging by the ruling party leaders, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said this regime must be ousted through a strong movement.
“There’s no reason for frustration. It had taken long nine years to unseat autocratic Ershad while 12 years to get rid of Pakistanis. So, I would like to tell those suffering from frustration that this regime will surely be ousted,” he said.
Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, was addressing a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, marking the 24th death anniversary of Shaheed Jehad.
Naziruddin Jehad, an activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), was shot dead in the capital during the movement against autocratic Ershad on October 10, 1990. JCD, the student associate body of BNP, and Shaheed Jehad Smriti Parishad observe October 10 as ‘Shaheed Jehad Day’.
Terming the current government illegal and immoral, Fakhrul said the ruling party leaders are now bragging to defend the government formed through a farcical election as they lost ground beneath their feet.
He accused the government of spreading falsehood and confusing people just to hang onto power.
Fakhrul claimed that though the Prime Minister had a 5-miniute photo session with the UN secretary general during the 69th UN General Assembly session, the ruling party is spreading lies that Sheikh Hasina had a long meeting with Ban Ki-moon and he did not raise any question about the legality of her government.
The BNP leader said Awami League is resorting to falsehood as they are not getting recognition from the international community.
He said the people of Bangladesh never tolerated any repressive and autocratic regime in the past and they will prove it again by toppling the current regime soon.
Claiming that their movement to resist the January-5 election had been a success, Fakhrul said people had burst into anger and put up a strong resistance by blocking roads and highways and railways responding to their call for boycotting the polls.
“The government should understand people are with us. If the government fails to regain its sense, we’ll wage a fierce movement again to ensure its fall,” he added.
The BNP leader lamented that Language Movement hero Abdul Matin was not given the state honour. “Awami League only respects only one person and one family, no one else. This party has, in fact, no confidence in democracy.”
He urged all to get united imbued with the spirit of Shaheed Jehad to establish people’s rights and restore democracy.
Fakhrul congratulated Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai and Indian children’s right activist Kailash Satyarthi for wining the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.
