BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday said all the citizens of Bangladesh are equal and there is no minority community in the country.
“Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony. Here the people of all religions live together. The people of every religion have the equal right. There’s no minority here as all are the citizens of Bangladesh,” she said.
Khaleda, also the former prime minister, said this while exchanging Durga Puja greetings with the leaders of the Hindu community at Ladies Club in the capital.
Several hundred Hindu community members attended the function to exchange greetings with the BNP chairperson.
Calling upon the Hindu community to work together for the betterment of the country, Khaleda said, “Let’s come up and get united to show others that we can carry out development works through united efforts.”
The opposition leader said there is a misconception that BNP maintains a distance with the Hindu community. “We believe in communal harmony and unity. We’ll fortify the relations when we’ll return to power.”
Khaleda went on: “We had renovated many temples when in power. We had also rebuilt Ramna Kali Mandir and set up temple-based libraries.”
The BNP chief said the people of all faiths living in Bangladesh has the equal right… so if anyone attacks another religion, stern action will be taken against him or her.
About Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s address to the nation and the DMP’s ban on rallies and meetings in the capital, Khaleda said they would come up with their formal reaction after holding meetings with BNP standing committee members and the leaders of BNP-led 18-party alliance.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and ASM Hannan Shah were, among others, present.
