The Election Commission has not yet taken any decision over the abolishment of the clause 91 (E) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO) that empowers it to cancel the candidature of any contestant for severe violation of the election code of conduct.
“We’re still working on the clause 91 (E). We’ll inform you when the decision is taken” Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad told reporters at his office on Wednesday.
The Commission earlier on its own decided to propose scrapping the provision for what it said the provision has no applicability but it retracted from its stance amid widespread criticisms by different quarters, including political parties.
The EC is yet to send the proposal to the government to pass it in parliament for enactment.
Over the upgradation of upazila election officers, the CEC said the final decision would be taken in the next meeting of the organogram committee.
The committee, headed by the CEC, held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the proposal for upgrading 301 Upazila election officers across the country from the ninth grade to the sixth grade of the current pay scale.
