BNP will never compromise its demand for revival of the caretaker system, its spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said.
Addressing an iftar gathering on Monday, the Acting Secretary General said: “Any election under Awami League can never be neutral. People want the election to be held a non-partisan government.”
He also threatened to compel the government to meet their demands through movements.
Speaking at another iftar, at around the same time, Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam expressed optimism that all political parties will take part in the upcoming general elections.
“Despite what they may say, they will join the polls,” he said.
The parliamentary elections will be held under the present government, for it has amended the Constitution, scrapping the provision for a caretaker regime to oversee national polls.
The BNP, however, has since been on the streets, threatening to boycott the election if it was not held under a non-party government.
The Awami League, on numerous occasions, has dismissed the BNP demand.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently reminded the BNP of the country’s experiences under the rule of the last army-backed caretaker.
Fakhrul said: “All the political parties and organisations should become united over the caretaker demand.”
He alleged the Awami League was conspiring as “it already knows that it can never return to power if the election is held under a non-partisan government”.
Fakhrul also slated Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, son of the Prime Minister, for his recent remark that “he has information that Awami League will return to office”.
“The remark of Joy proves his party is plotting to win in the polls,” he said.
Speaking at an iftar on July 23, Joy made the comment.
The BNP later fiercely criticised him for it.
Later, Hasina herself answered to those ‘hard talks’ on behalf of her son. “When Joy said he got that information through poll, his remark was misrepresented.”
