Voicing grave concern over the post-polls violence, chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof Mizanur Rahman on Wednesday urged the government to use its force, if required, to resist the evil forces to put an end to the violence.
“I want to remind the state and the government that it’s time to resist the evil forces (by any means), if needed, by using force. We (pro-liberation and progressive forces) must protect Bangladesh and uphold non-communal spirit,” he said.
The NHRC chief came up with the strong remark while speaking in a views-exchange meeting at Judicial Administration Training Institute in the capital.
Stating that the state has to ensure safety of all citizens, Dr Mizan hoped that the government will take effective steps in this regard.
Observing that the government has failed to prevent violence over the national polls, the rights boss expressed apprehension that prolonged failure will increase communal attacks on minority community.
The failure in resisting polls-related violence might jeopardise the country’s existence which has been established on the spirit of the Liberation War, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque termed ‘miscreants’ those carrying out attacks on the minority people and said, “I don’t acknowledge that they (attackers) have political identities.”
Condemning the recent communal attacks on the minority people, Justice Khairul, also Law Commission chairman, demanded that the culprits be brought to book immediately.
NHRC secretary M Ashraful Islam and its member M Shah Alam were, among others, present.
