N’ganj tragedy victims were strangled with rope: Autopsy report

3 more firearms of Nur’s aides recovered

Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam, lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker and three others were hit in the heads before strangulating to death with rope.

This was disclosed in the post-mortem report of five of the victims.

Dr Asaduzzaman Miah, resident medical officer of Narayanganj General Hospital and the head of the three-member autopsy board, submitted the post-mortem reports of Nazrul, Chandan, Moniruzzaman Swapan, Tajul Islam and Ibrahim to the district Civil Surgeon Dr Dulal Chandra Chowdhury on Wednesday noon.

Talking to reporters at his office, the civil surgeon said all the victims were murdered in the same style. “They were first hit in the heads and then strangled with rope.”

Holes were pierced beneath the navels of all the victims so that their bodies did not float after dumping in the river, he said, adding that there were also marks of injury on their chests.

Stating that performing autopsy on the victims began around 5:30pm on April 30, the civil surgeon said the victims were killed some 48-72 hours before start of the post-mortem. “It seems from the murder style that the killers were professional, skilled and trained. It was not possible for any individual to carry out the murders.”

Meanwhile, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) visited the places of abduction and body recovery on Wednesday as part of their investigation into the alleged involvement of three Rab officials in the incident.

The Rab team, led by additional director general Aftab Uddin Ahmed, first went to Madanganj and Char Dhalewshari from where the bodies were recovered. Then they visited the abduction spot at Lamapara on Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road.

Later, the Rab team went to Rab-11 office.

In another development, police recovered three more firearms, whose licences were revoked earlier, from the houses of three associates of Nur Hossain on Wednesday.

Officer-in-charge of Siddhirganj Police Station Abdul Matin said they recovered a shotgun each from the houses of Shahjahan, Ali Ahammed and Sanaullah Sana.

With this, seven firearms have so far been recovered.

On Monday, the district administration took away the licences of 11 firearms of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) councillor Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the seven-murder case, and his associates.

On April 27, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, his three associates and driver, were abducted by miscreants from Fatullah area of the city. Hours after their abduction, senior lawyer at district Judge’s Court Chandan Kumar Sarker and his driver were also abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.

Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan Kumar, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30.

Besides, another body, believed to be of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on May 1.
