Lawyers in Narayanganj on Tuesday demanded that Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhary Maya should step down from power for the sake of fair investigation into the 7-Murder case.
Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhary Maya is the father-in-law of the murder case’s one of the prime accused Lieutenant Colonel Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, also a former Rapid Action Battalion commanding officer. Lawyers feared that the investigation would be influenced and hampered as Maya is holding a vital post in the government.
The lawyers also demanded that Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and two other dismissed RAB 11 officers — Major Arif Hossain and Lieutenant Commander MM Rana — be shown arrested in the multiple-murder case.
Narayanganj District Lawyers’ Association president Sakhawat Hossain, while addressing a rally in front of the association office on Tuesday, said that the police were yet to arrest the prime accused Nur Hossain and others in connection with the seven-murder incidents.
He added: “the three arrested RAB officers are getting warm hospitality at the interrogation cells. We urge the prime minister to order a fair investigation into the murder case.”
“Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya cannot act as the disaster management and relief minister until the investigation into the case is finished,” Sakhawat Hossain added.
Narayanganj District Lawyers’ Association general secretary Zakir Hossain claimed that the evidences of the gruesome killings were being damaged.
He demanded immediate arrest of the people responsible for the killings; and the officials of the local administration who had helped Nur Hossain flee following the killings.
Earlier, the lawyers observed an hour-long work abstention starting from 9:30am.
Narayanganj city councillor Nur Hossain, also Siddhirganj Upazila unit Awami League vice-president, is the prime accused in the case filed in connection with the abduction and killing of city councillor Nazrul Islam, senior lawyer Chandan Sarker and five others.
Six bodies, including those of Nazrul and Chandan, were found floating in the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on 30 April and another was found the following day.
Nazrul’s father-in-law Shahidul Islam on May 4 alleged that some members of the elite crime bustling force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) had abducted and murdered Nazrul in exchange for Tk six crore. He claimed that some workers saw RAB men abducting Nazrul near Shibu Market in Narayanganj on 27 April.
The government on 6 May dismissed the three RAB-11 officers.
