Detectives have finally pressed charge sheet against 35 people including three sacked RAB officials for killing seven people after abduction and dumping the bodies in Narayanganj in April last year.
Officer-in-Charge of the Narayanganj district’s Detective Branch of police Mamunur Rashid Mondal, also the investigation officer of two cases filed over the gruesome multiple murders, submitted the charge sheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Wednesday afternoon.
In the charge sheet, three sacked RAB officials – Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana – and Nur Hossain, along with the others, were found guilty.
Senior Judicial Magistrate received the charge sheet and fixed May 11 for the next hearing, Sakhawat Hossain Khan, president of Narayanganj Bar Association confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune.
He said, of the charge-sheeted accused, 21 are former or present members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and of the total accused persons, 13 are still at large.
The detectives exempted 16 people – five FIR-named and 11 arrestees – from the murder charges.
On April 27 last, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in the city. At the same time, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.
Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya and Dhaleshwari rivers on April 30. Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on May 1.
Later, the two cases were filed in connection with the murders. Nazrul’s wife Selina Islam Beauty filed a case against six people, including NCC councillor Nur Hossain, while Chandan’s son-in-law Bijoy Kumar Paul filed the other case against some unknown people.
Later, Shahidul Islam, Nazrul’s father-in-law, claimed that Rab officials killed Nazrul and others in exchange for Tk6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the murder case, and other accomplices.
The three former officials of Rab-11 in Narayanganj-Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Navy’s Lt Commander MM Rana — were sent on forced retirement for their alleged involvement in the incident.
They are now in jail. On June 14 last, Paschimbanga police arrested Nur Hossain from an apartment in Kolkata.
