New Yorkers panicked as AL factions clash

A discussion marking Mujibnagar Day was cancelled following a clash between two factions of the US unit of Bangladesh Awami League in New York city on Monday evening.

The violent clash triggered panic in the Jackson Heights neighbourhood of the US city.

As the clash broke out, a large number of members of the NY Police Department in 20 vehicles reached the spot and calmed down the situation.

Witnesses said when Awami League US unit president Siddiqur Rahman was addressing the discussion at a restaurant in the city, suspended AL general secretary Sazzadur Rahman entered the venue with his associates.

He then shouted loudly: This meeting of the Awami League’s US unit has been called defying organisational rules. Why was I not told about the programme?

Replying his comment, the president vented anger to Sazzad, You have been expelled from the party.

US Awami League will be run by in directives. You must leave the meeting, Siddiqur Rahman said.

Later, the members of the two AL factions started hurling abusive words and threw chairs at each other.

At one stage, Siddiqur went out of the place and called the police. Also the bystanders rang the emergency no. 911, and police with 20 vehicles reached the spot.

Repeated attempts were failed when Prothom Alo tried to communicate with the AL president of the US unit Siddiqur Rahman to take comment on it.
