Police have released seven CCTV footages taken from last year’s Amar Ekushey Book Fair area just before secular writer-blogger Avijit Roy was killed.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police have marked five more suspects in the videos and sought the people’s help to identify them.
The videos have been posted on the DMP’s Facebook page.
The Citizens have been asked to inform police about the suspects by messaging on the page or counterterrorism unit’s Hello CT app.
Police earlier published one of the seven videos on June 19 and identified a person as ‘Shariful’, a ‘key member’ Ansarullah Bangla Team’s ‘operations wing’.
Sharif, one of the six suspects in blogger killings with rewards on their heads, was killed in a so-called ‘gunfight’ with police in Khilgaon earlier that day.
He was seen following Avijit and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya in the video.
He was using aliases ‘Shakib’, ‘Saleh’, ‘Arif’ and ‘Hadi’ to conceal his identity, police said. There was a Tk 500,000 reward on his head.
Police have now spotted two others as suspects in the same video.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com: “We’ve identified six. One of them has died in encounter. We’ve now released the videos to get information on the others.”
Professor Ajay Roy’s son Avijit, a naturalised US citizen, founded a blog for freethinkers: Mukto-Mona. He had been threatened with death for his writings against radicalism several times.
His wife Bonya lost a thumb in the attack in the TSC area on Feb 26 last year after they had left the book fair.
Police say a six-member squad of the ABT carried out the attack on them.
Right after Avijit’s murder, the owner of a teashop in the area told bdnews24.com that he had seen how two assailants had swooped on the couple with machetes. The two perpetrators then fled in different directions.
After releasing the first video, Detective Branch Deputy Commissioner Mashrukur Rahman Khaled had told bdnews24.com that they had also gathered intelligence regarding the five other members of Sharif’s team.
“There was an obese man who most probably is from Old Dhaka. He has a good grip on technology. We also have physical descriptions of the four others. We hope to catch them soon,” he had said.
