BNP on Saturday said the new government going to be formed by Awami League on Sunday will be an autocratic regime as it has no people’s mandate.
“The government which will be formed on January 12 will be the administration of dictatorship without having any representation of people. This regime will in no way be considered both at home and abroad as the legal government,” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a statement.
Fakhrul also said the new government will not get constitutional legitimacy as it has no people’s mandate to run the state.
The BNP spokesman said it will be better for the ruling party to quit and hold a free, fair and inclusive election under a non-party caretaker government. “Otherwise, the country’s people will restore their justified democratic rights through a united movement,” he said.
Taking a swipe at Sheikh Hasina, he said, “Resorting to falsehood over the scandalous, shameful and hated farcical election, the Prime Minister still wants to run the state with boast and arrogance.”
Claiming that the just-concluded national election has been rejected both at home and abroad, Fakhrul said, “The whole country has become hostage to the stubbornness autocratic behaviour of one person (indicating the PM).”
He also accused Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Awami League, of trying to perpetuate power through destroying all democratic institutions.
In this regard, he mentioned that Awami League had attempted to establish one-party Baksal in 1975 the same way.
Reminding the government of the fate of autocrats, the BNP leader said Awami League will not be able to perpetuate the power abusing state power as autocratic governments cannot secure people’s support.
Charging the government with post-polls violence, Fakhrul said, “The government shifting the blame of violence onto the opposition in a planned way to divert people’s attention from the flawed the election. Awami League cadres are carrying out vandalism and attacks on the houses (and properties) of minorities and the opposition men.”
He also alleged that the President, the Speaker and the Election Commission have violated the Constitution through having the newly elected members of parliament sworn in before the expiry of the current parliament.
