The Netherlands has showed interest to provide financial and technical assistance for building a deep seaport and LNG terminals in Bangladesh.
Netherlands Ambassador in Dhaka Gerben Sjoerd De Jong on Sunday said this when he met Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal at the latter’s office in the capital.
At a joint press briefing, Minister Mustafa Kamal told reporters, “He (envoy) has come with proposals for a deep seaport and LNG terminals. Netherlands is interested in providing assistance for river dredging.”
The adverse impacts of climate change, a common problem for both the countries, and prevention and adaptation process of the climate change were also discussed at the meeting, he said adding the Netherlands is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change.
The minister informed the Dutch envoy about the government measures to improve the RMG sector saying, “The government has taken all possible measures so that no incident like Rana Plaza collapse can recur in the future.”
Netherlands is also interested to assist 50-year long Bangladesh Delta Plan taken to deal with issues like climate change, water resources management, river dredging and construction of embankment in a coordinated manner, he said.
Bangladesh will be very a rich country within only 20-30 years if Delta Plan can be implemented, the planning minister hoped.
The Dutch envoy said a lot of projects jointly taken by the Netherlands and Bangladesh also came up at the meeting for discussions.
“We’ve exchanged views over river dredging, river and costal area management, and agricultural cooperation,” he said.
About wind energy, Gerben Sjoerd De Jong said there is no scope for government-to-government investment in the wind energy of Bangladesh, but there could be investment through private channels.
