Negotiation only way to overcome crisis: BNP

Opposition BNP on Saturday renewed its call to the government to reach an understanding to overcome the ongoing political crisis over the polls-time administration.

“There’re two ways — compromise and violence — are opened for the government. We think negotiation is the only way to overcome the present crisis,” said BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed.

The BNP leader made the call at a press conference of BNP Parliamentary Party at Parliament Media Centre.

Moudud warned that the consequences will be dire if the government chooses the path of violence ignoring the opposition’s demand for restoration of the caretaker government.

He also apprehended that democracy will be at stake if the government unilaterally tries to hold the next election under their own arrangement.
Reiterating his party’s stance on polls-time administration, Moudud said BNP and its alliance partners will not take part in the election if it is held under any party government.

“If the government resorts to the path of violence leaving the path of negotiation, the BNP-led 18-partry alliance will force it to arrange the next polls under a non-party caretaker government,” the BNP leader said.

He alleged that the government did not give any positive response to the repeated calls by leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia for resolving the ongoing political deadlock through a negotiation.

The former law minister, however, hoped that the government will take initiatives for holding the next polls under a non-party government by dissolving the current parliament to avoid violence. “If you take such initiatives, we’ll cooperate with you, and it’ll be good for both political parties and democracy.”

About the new budget, he said it will not be able to fulfill people’s expectations. Like previous ones, the targets will not be achieved due to the government’s incompetence and corruption.

The senior BNP MP alleged that they did not get proper answers and solution from the treasury bench members on various crucial issues they raised in the House on point of orders.

He also said they did not get proper answers from the treasury bench members about the government’s interference in the Grameen Bank and its negative attitude towards Dr Ynus. “Rather, the Finance Minister spoke blatant lies in this regard.”

Though he was critical of the ruling party MPs for their aggressive and attacking attitude, Moudud thanked new speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for her overall role.

Acting opposition chief whip Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Anee, BNP MPs Jamiruddin Sircar, Jafrul Islam and Abul Khaier Bhuiyan were, among others, present.
