Prolific thinker, prominent sociologist and National Professor Rangalal Sen died at a Chittagong hospital on Monday afternoon. He was 81.
Ashraf Ali Khan, director of Dhaka University’s public relations department, confirmed about his death to the Dhaka Tribune.
Sen had been suffering from kidney disease and other old-age ailments.
He left his wife, one son and two daughters, and a large number of professional colleagues, students, followers and readers to mourn his death.
Expressing deep shock, DU Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddque said the nation had lost a devoted teacher and researcher.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed profound shock at the death of noted academic, social scientist and researcher National Professor Rangalal Sen.
The President and the PM have prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed his profound sympathy to members of bereaved family.
Born in Moulobhibazar of Sylhet, Prof Sen was a great think-tank of progressive and non-communal concept and had many books in his credit.
Rangalal Sen who has been a celebrated theorist of the society, culture and politics, discharged the responsibilities of the chairman of sociology department, provost of Jagannath Hall, member of the senate of the university.
He retired as a professor in 1993. He, however, continued his job with the university for five years more as contractual basis.
Mourning his death, Rafique Ullah Khan, professor of Bangla department, said: “Professor Rangalal was always a great influence on us as he emerged as the leading figure among the teachers of the university who upheld the ideologies of liberation war after 1975.”
“Professor Sen was a massively influential proponent of progressive ideas. A man of such height had a significant contribution in research, which made a great impact on the fellow colleagues and students,” he added.
