Bangabandhu was brutally killed on August 15, 1971, as the killers wanted to make the nation face a leadership crisis, says Muhith
The contribution of the country’s youths was greater than that of India during the 1971 War of Liberation, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said.
It is, however, undeniable that India extended its all-out assistance to us at the time, he said while addressing two separate discussions organised on the occasion of National Mourning Day in Sylhet.
At the second discussion, the minister almost repeated the words he had uttered during the first programme.
“We were neglected during the Pakistani period. Also, we were resisted from becoming self-reliant. The people then fought for nine months for independence,” the minister said.
Describing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as an uncompromising man who was not greedy, Muhith said he was brutally killed on August 15, 1975, as the killers wanted to make the nation face a leadership crisis.
“However, they failed,” he said.
The finance minister called on activists to turn the grief of the month into strength.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, Awami League Organising Secretary Advocate Misbah Uddin Siraj, Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Sajjadul Hassan and several others addressed the discussions.
Earlier in the day, the finance minister laid a floral wreath at Bangabandhu’s portrait at Sylhet central shaheed minar.
