BNP has said that the party will continue its movement for democracy until it is restored.

Party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul has called for a “greater movement to restore democracy” after paying homage at the Central Shaheed Minar marking the 21st February Martyr’s Day on Tuesday.

“Democracy was the spirit of Omor Ekushey. That spirit is now lost. We will continue our movement until democracy is restored,” said the senior BNP leader.

He criticized the government saying that both the Liberation War and Language movement were based on the spirit of democracy.

“Those in power today have betrayed the martyrs by destroying democracy,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, BNP leaders including Fakhrul visited the graves of language martyrs at Dhaka’s Azimpur.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia paid floral tributes at the Central Shaheed Minar at 1:32am on the day.

Mirza Fakhrul, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mahbubur Rahman, Jamir Uddin Sarker, Mirza Abbas, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Abdullah Al Noman accompanied her.
