Measures to extend the 19th session of Parliament are on as the Business Advisory Committee is scheduled to sit on Wednesday.
Md Joynal Abedin, who directs Parliament’s PR, confirmed bdnews24.com of the meeting.
The Committee presided by Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will convene at 3.30pm. Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia also sit on the Committee.
“Tomorrow’s (Wednesday) meeting will decide how long Parliament session will continue,” Chief Whip Abdus Shahid said, speaking to bdnews24.com.
The parliament session is scheduled to resume from 4pm Wednesday after a break of 13 days.
The 19th session kicked off on Sep 12 without the opposition. The Business Advisory Committee decided the same day to run the session through to Oct 24.
Countdown to the 10th parliamentary elections starts from Oct 25.
The 15th constitutional amendment mandates holding the general election in 90 days to the expiry of the incumbent Parliament, which is the period between Oct 25 and Jan 24 next year. Parliament will be in effect and the ruling Awami League in power throughout this period.
The BNP has threatened a boycott if the next election is conducted under a partisan government and with the ruling MPs still in office, arguing such arrangements will deny equal opportunities in the lead-up to the parliamentary polls.
Senior Awami League leaders on Oct 10 called for the ongoing session to extend beyond the pre-scheduled ending.On Oct 13, at a meeting of Awami League’s Central Working Committee, Hasina had said the session would continue beyond Oct 24.
