Flooding triggered by early monsoon rains and onrush of waters from upstream engulfed more areas in Rangpur and Bogra districts while the breach in the Brahmaputra flood protection dam in Sirajganj widened on Sunday.
Flood Information Centre of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre under Water Development Board said all the major rivers were rising.
Reports received from Gaibandha said vast char areas in the districts were flooded forcing the affected people to take shelters in nearby higher grounds. Standing crops, particularly jute and summer vegetables, on hundreds of acres went under water.
Want of food and drinking water have mounted the miseries of the flood victims.
In Gaibandha, the flood situation in chars and four upazilas worsened further as Brahmaputra continued rising till Sunday morning.
Brahmaputra rose by 6cm during the period due to incessant rain and onrush of waters from upstream, officials of Water Development Board said.
The flood-affected unions are Kapasia and Chandipur under Sundarganj upazila, Kamarjani and Mollarchar under Sadar upazila, Fazlupur, Erendabari, Gazaria, Fulchhari and Urya under Fulchhari upazila and Holdia and Saghata unions under Saghata upazila.
New Age correspondent in Rangpur reported that new areas had been flooded in Gangachara upazila as rain-fed Teesta continued eroding its banks. The marginal dyke in the area has gone under water.
In past one week, incessant rain and upstream water caused flooding affecting 20 villages in the upazila, according to the local union parishad chairmen.
Our correspondent in Bogra, quoting Dhunot upazila chairman AKM Tauhidul Islam, reported that the floodwater had entered Chikashi, Gazaria and Chunipara as water level in Jamuna was increasing.
In Sariakandi upazila, flood engulfed at least 16 villages breaching a 61- metre stretch of the dam on Friday and forcing the affected people to leave their homes for safer places, according to the locals.
Sariakandi upazila nirbahi officer Shakil Mahmud, however, claimed that no fresh areas were affected on Sunday and the floodwater would start receding in a day or two.
In Sirajganj, swelling Brahmaputra breached more 50 metres of the flood protection dam at Balibhog point in Sirajganj Sadar upazila. Onrush of water breached a 200-metre stretch of the dam on Saturday, according to our correspondent in the district.
Sirajganj WDB executive engineer Hasan Imam said they were trying to repair the dam.
The Flood Information Centre of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre under WDB said on Sunday that all the major rivers were rising forecast that the water levels in Brahmaputra and Surma-Kushiyara river systems might start to fall while the Ganges-Padma river systems might continue to rise in 24 hours till 6:00am Monday.
It said that flooding in some areas of Bogra, Jamalpur, Sylhet and Gaibandha districts might worsen further and the situation in Sunamganj might improve during the period.
The FFWC data shows that, out of 84 stations monitored, rivers were flowing above danger levels at six points, while the water levels were rising at 50 points.
