Maintaining its no-comment policy over verdicts against war criminals, BNP on Tuesday refrained from making any comment on the Supreme Court judgment that handed down death sentence to Abdul Quader Mollah, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, a key ally of the party.
Approached, no one of the party’s senior leaders wanted to make any comment on the verdict.
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Tuesday sentenced lifer Jamaat acting secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Allowing the government’s appeal seeking death sentence for Mollah, the five-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain, pronounced the final judgment at 9:35 am saying the convict be hanged till death.
BNP has made no comment, formally or unofficially, on the verdicts so far delivered by the International Crimes Tribunals.
Though the party leaders after every verdict had said they would officially come up with reaction, they never did that.
Barrister Abdur Razzaq, the principal counsel for condemned Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah at a press conference at the Supreme Court Bar auditorium, termed the verdict a wrong one. ”It’s an unfortunate chapter in the judiciary’s history.”
However, two BNP standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah who were present at the press meet did not make any remark on the judgment.
Sought comments, Moudud said, “I don’t have personal opinion on the verdict. The party’s reaction will be given later.”
BNP standing committee members Dr Mosharraf Hossain and Rafiqul Islam Miah said the party will come up with its reaction later.
Unlike other leaders, BNP standing committee member Lt Gen Mahbubur Rahman said, “There’s no scope for making any comment on the matter as it’s the final judgment of the country’s apex court.
Contacted, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said he did not get any instruction from the BNP high-ups to give any reaction of the party to it.
Despite repeated attempts, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul could not be reached over cellophane.

This silence is not only shameful but cowardice too. Is BNP failing to lead the nation? Brightness is clear from darkness, Truth is clear from falsehood, Right is clear from wrong. BNP should speak out loud and stand for justice. Condemn the Kangaroo court political travesty in clear cut & absolute term. What the leadership is afraid of. Are they afraid of telling the truth? Time & tide wait for none..
