Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said his country wants to take its relations with Bangladesh to a greater height through ‘frequent’ meetings and broader engagements on issues of priorities and mutual concerns.
“We should meet frequently so as to better understand each other’s priorities, perspectives and concerns and thereby take our relations to greater heights in the future,” he wrote to his Bangladesh counterpart Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said this at a press conference at the Foreign Ministry quoting the letter that visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj handed over to the Bangladesh Prime Minister here on Thursday.
“For us, Bangladesh is not merely a neighbour, but a nation with which we share history, culture, civilisation and enduring links between people,” Mahmood Ali told reporters quoting Modi.
The emotional bonds of Bangladesh’s birth as an independent nation and the ideals of democracy, secularism, pluralism and the rule of law also serve as a link between India and Bangladesh, the Indian Prime Minister wrote in his letter to Hasina.
“I’m delighted to accept your kind invitation to visit Bangladesh. I also take this opportunity to extend an invitation to you to visit India at your earliest convenience,” he wrote.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi Tariq Karim were also present.
