The BNP’s acting secretary general has claimed that abduction, terror and torture has become an epidemic in Bangladesh and advised his party activists not to be alone at any place.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press conference on Friday also urged party members to communicate with the party headquarters to prevent these crimes.
“The law enforcement has failed to prevent an epidemic of abduction, terror and torture,” Mirza Fakhrul said at the BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office in the afternoon.
“In some places the criminals are disguising themselves as law enforcers, but the authorities are content with just denying any involvement,” he said.
He called on the party activists to stay alert and stay in contact the headquarters regularly.
“Report every incident to the centre. If you get wind of something happening, take as many people as possible and go there. Try to resist the crime together.”
Fakhrul asked members of the BNP and allied political parties to follow the ‘organisational red alert’ declared by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He also advised the party activists to avoid moving around alone and avoid unsafe and secluded areas.
The BNP spokesperson called on everyone to raise awareness and build resistance against murder and abduction by distributing leaflets, putting up posters and holding meetings.
He said party activists should collect the phone numbers of journalists and law enforcement officials and use them when necessary.
“If someone is found impersonating a law enforcement official, capture them and hand them over to the police,” he said.
On Thursday, party chief Khaleda Zia declared “an organisational red alert all over the country”.
“Whoever tries to abduct you, capture them. Whether it’s police or RAB, don’t let them go,” she had urged the people.
