A Dhaka court has granted the Criminal Investigation Department three more months to submit further investigation reports in connection with the case filed over Maj Gen Abul Manzur murder in 1981.
First Additional District and Session Judge Khondker Hasan Md Firoz passed the order after hearing on a time petition filed by CID Special Superintendent Abdul Kahar Akond, also investigating officer of the case.
Kahar sought three more months for further investigation in the case. The court granted the plea and ordered to submit the report by October 9.
With this, the court extended the time for submitting the probe report for the third time.
Earlier on Monday, IO Abdul Kahar Akhand told the Dhaka Tribune: “We will not submit the report tomorrow [Tuesday].”
Asked for reason, he said: “I am not aware that tomorrow is the date for submitting the report. The 83 days finished so quickly?”
On April 22, a Dhaka court granted CID 83 more days to submit further investigation reports which ends on Tuesday.
General Manzur was killed in 1981 after the assassination of BNP founder and then president Ziaur Rahman.
On February 28, 1995, barrister Abul Monsoor Ahmed, brother of slain Abul Manzoor, lodged a case with Panchlaish police station in Chittagong accusing Major Emdadul of killing Manzur.
Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad, also the prime minister’s special envoy, is an accused in the murder case.
On July 15, 1995, CID officer Abdul Kahar Akand submitted the charge sheet to the court against five including Ershad, former DGFI officer Kazi Emdadul Haque, who was later discharged from the service, discharged officer Mustafa Kamal Uddin Bhuiyan and two retired army officers – Abdul Latif and Shamsur Rahman Shams.
