Amid the opposition’s constant threat to boycott the upcoming polls, Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim on Saturday said many BNP men are interested to take part in the election.
“BNP isn’t coming up to join the polls only to implement Jamaat-e-Islami’s agenda… But many of its leaders are interested to take part in the polls,” he said while addressing a joint extended meeting at the Mohila Awami League district unit office.
Nasim, also a former Home Minister, said if BNP does not take part in the national election, it will face a commotion within itself.
“The ensuing parliamentary elections must be held by January 24 next and no one would be able to foil it despite conspiracy from both at home and abroad,” he said.
Nasim called upon BNP to take part in the polls through dialogue shunning its counterproductive stanch as most of the political parties, including religious based parties, have already decided to take part in the election.
The meeting, presided over by AL district acting president Mustafizur Rahman, was addressed, among others, by local AL general secretary advocate KM Hossain Ali, vice-president Abu Yusuf Surja, PM’s personal physician Prof Habib-e-Millat Munna and Mahila AL leader Jannat Ara Henri.
Nasim said there is no reason to think that there will be February 15-like election (1996). “Any conspiracy over the next parliamentary polls will be dealt with an iron hand,” he said.
Issuing a note of warning, Mohammad Nasim said, “Awami League is not Ram Krishna Mission that it would sit idle if anyone tries to thwart the polls.”
