Opposition-backed mayoral candidate MA Mannan has claimed that he got both ‘blessing and support’ from Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad in his bid to get elected as Gazipur City Corporation Mayor.
“He (Ershad) is my senior. I came to seek his blessings. He has blessed and supported me,” Mannan said after seeing teh former President at his Bardhara residence at 6:40pm on Tuesday.
He held a 40-minute closed-door meeting with Ershad, a partner in the Awami League-led 18-Party Grand Alliance.
“Mr Ershad said, ‘Azmat Ullah Khan (Grand Alliance-backed mayoral aspirant) came earlier. I blessed him. But I give you both my blessing and support’.” Mannan said.
He said the local Jatiya Party unit in Gazipur city already extended support to him.
Earlier on Monday morning, Azmat had called on Ershad at his residence.
Elections to the newly formed city corporation will be held on Jul 6.
Opposition-backed candidates swept the Jun 15 city corporation polls in Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet.
