Mannan complains against 81 polls officers

Opposition-backed mayoral candidate in the Gazipur city corporation polls MA Mannan has made allegations against one-fifth of the presiding officers.

His polling agent Siddiqur Rahman lodged complaints with the returning officer against 81 presiding officers on Monday.

A total of 392 presiding officers, 2,289 assistant presiding officers and around 4,500 polling officers will be on election duty on July 6.

Returning Officer Matiar Rahman told reporters: “We’ve asked (him) to let us know specifically what allegation he has against whom, and not to lodge sweeping complaints.”

Mannan made the allegations on a day when the candidates discussed election matters with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.

He alleged the administration was exerting influence to give ruling alliance-backed mayoral aspirant Azmat Ullah Khan an edge.

At the meeting, Azmat accused Mannan of using religion as campaign plank to get political mileage.

Meanwhile, agent Siddiqur claimed that a negative campaign was on against Mannan, saying he had embezzled Hajj money while he was the state minister for religious affairs.
