Malaysia lifts ban on Bangladeshi workers

3 deals signed; recruitment to start next year

Kuala Lumpur on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Dhaka on recruitment of Bangladeshi workers to Malaysia lifting a nearly four-year ban on the manpower recruitment.

The MoU was signed by Malaysian government’s Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S Subramaniam and Bangladesh Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre in Malaysia, joint secretary (administration) Md Nurul Islam confirmed The Daily Star.

Besides, two more MoUs were signed on human trafficking prevention and inter-state crimes prevention respectively as per the conditions of the Malaysian government.

Now, Bangladeshi workers will be sent to Malaysia under state arrangements putting an end to the middlemen’s meddling in the recruitment process.

The Malaysian government unofficially stopped recruiting Bangladeshi workers from 2009 on the allegations of corruptions and irregularities in the recruitment.

The government held detailed talks with Malaysian Human Resources Minister Dr S Subramaniam in Dhaka in September this year for the recruitment under state arrangements.

Under the MoU, the cost will be maximum Tk 40,000 for a jobseeker to get a job in Malaysia.

A delegation led by the Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain reached Malaysia on November 24 from Mauritius where they had attended at a global summit on migration and development November 21.
