Madrasah teacher gets life for violating minor in Chandpur

A court here on Monday convicted a madrasah teacher and sentenced him to life imprisonment for violating a minor girl in Hajiganj upazila three years back.

The convict was identified as Abdul Jalil, 55, a lecturer in Arabic at Kapaicup Islamia Senior Madrasah in the upazila.

The court also fined him Tk 1 lakh and asked him to bear all the expenses of Mariam, child of the rape victim.

According to the prosecution, Abdul Jalil violated the Class-VI student of his madrasah on August 3, 2010.

Later, the then principal of the madrasah Abdul Hye and madrasah managing committee member Abdur Rob married the victim off to the accused teacher.

However, the victim’s family refused to accept the marriage and instead filed a case against Abdul Jalil on January 19, 2011.

The victim gave birth to the baby girl, Mariam, in June, 2011 at the One-stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

After examining the records and witnesses, Judge Mohammad Shafiqul Karim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal handed down the verdict when Jalil was present in the dock.
