Annoyed by the growing political intolerance, Textiles and Jute Minster Abdul Latif Siddiqui on Tuesday announced in Parliament that he would no longer contest any election as he has quit election politics.
He made the announcement while participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget in the House.
“This is my last speech in Parliament on budget discussion. I won’t join election politics any more, but I’ll continue my efforts and obey the directives to be given by Sheikh Hasina,” he told the House.
Latif, also the presidium member of the ruling Awami League, said he would continue his political career in only party politics under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, as these days there is no tolerance to other’s opinion.
Turning to the proposed budget, Latif Siddiqui quipped, “This budget has registered conjugal activities…a martial law budget is a like an extramarital affair.”
He said there is no political crisis in the country. “But, many say there’s a political crisis in the country.”
On the trial of war criminals, the Textiles Minister said the country’s image will be brightened if the trial of war criminals is completed and the verdicts are executed.
Responding to Moudud Ahmed’s comment on the Anti-Terrorism Bill 2009 (Amended) he said, the bill was not supposed to be imposed on any gentleman or woman.
Making flashback to his political career, he admitted that he was a member of Baksal and said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had formed the national party.
