Kuwait to hire Bangladeshis

Director General of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) Begum Shamsun Nahar said the Bangladesh embassy in Kuwait had sought some 593 workers for employment in a particular company in Kuwait.

She said on Monday the government’s ‘labour diplomacy’ had persuaded the Kuwaiti authorities to resume recruitment.

According to BMET, Kuwait has been recruiting workers from Bangladesh since 1976. Around 480,000 Bangladeshis have so far gone to that country to work.

Kuwait had stopped recruiting Bangladeshi workers since 2007 after detecting irregularities in recruitment and the workers’ involvement in illegal activities.

Shamsun Nahar said Kuwait was one of the biggest sources of remittance. She said Kuwait’s decision to resume recruitment would help boost remittance inflow.

If Bangladeshi workers could work in Kuwait without getting involved with illegal activities, the country would gradually increase recruitment from Bangladesh, she added.
