Candidates of the recently established political parties, such as Trinamool BNP and Bangladesh Nationalist Movement, labelled as King’s Party by many, have been defeated in the 12th national election.
Trinamool BNP chairperson Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury has been defeated by former education minister and ruling Awami League candidate Nurul Islam Nahid in Sylhet-6 constituency.
Shamsher Mobin bagged only 10,000 votes and got third position in the polls results with Nahid getting 58,126 votes.
Trinamool BNP secretary general Taimur Alam Khandaker, who contested from Narayanganj-1 constituency in which ruling AL candidate and incumbent minister for textiles and jute Golam Dastagir Gazi won by securing 1,56,431 votes.
Meanwhile, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Movement, Shah Muhammad Abu Zafar, has also been defeated by AL candidate Md Abdur Rahman in the polls. Abdur Rahman has bagged 1,23,331 votes, followed by his nearest contestant independent candidate Arifur Rahman Dolon.
Trinamool founder Nazmul Huda’s daughter Antara Huda, also executive president of the party and contesting from the Munshiganj-1 constituency, has been defeated by AL candidate Mohammad Mohiuddin Ahmed.
None of the candidates of Tranmool and BNM have been found elected in the polls till filing of this report at 11:00pm.
Trinamool BNP was founded by former BNP minister Nazmul Huda, who died in last February, days after the organisation had secured registration as a political party.
The party is now under the leadership of two former BNP leaders, Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and Taimur Alam Khandaker, who are acting respectively as chairman and secretary general.
The Election Commission, on August 10, gave registration to the BNM with former BNP lawmaker Abdur Rahman as its convener and retired army major Md Hanif as member secretary.
On November 16, the BNM suddenly held a council session at a leader’s private office in Gulshan, Dhaka. The council abolished the 31-member convening committee and formed a fresh central and national standing committee. The new council made Md Shahajhan secretary general, keeping the chairman post vacant.
Former BNP lawmaker Shah Mohammad Abu Zafar was made the party’s acting chairman soon after he joined BNM on November 13.
