The students of ASA University blocked Mirpur Road in front of its campus at Shyamoli in the capital on Tuesday, protesting at the death of one of their fellows being hit by a bus carrying police personnel on Monday.
The agitated students put up the blockade on the road around noon halting traffic from College Gate to Shyamali triggering severe tailback on the city’s one of the busiest roads.
Later, around 2:00pm the students withdrew their blockade after some university teachers along with
police officers assured them of taking proper steps in the connection.
Ashraful Islam Tapu, student of ASA University, was killed and his co-rider was injured as a police bus on the wrong side hit the motorbike they were riding in the capital’s Banani on Monday afternoon.
Protesting at the death, the students during the blockade questioned police’s responsibility as law enforcers.
The organisers told reporters that they had withdrawn the road blockade till Friday to see what steps were taken against the policemen involved in the accident.
The traffic was halted at both ends of the busy road for around two hours, said sub-inspector Robiul Alam of Mohammadpur police station.
Banani police station officer-in-charge Salah Uddin Khan said they had arrested the bus driver.
He said that the bus was requisitioned by the police but its driver was not a policeman.
