State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam on Tuesday said opposition leader Khaleda Zia will be tried for instigating hartal violence.
He made the remarks while speaking at a joint press briefing at the conference room of the CHT Affairs Ministry.
Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir and Law Minister Shafique Ahmed also spoke at the press briefing.
They said the government will take punitive action against those who are involved in hurting the religious sentiments through their contents in different blogs and social sites.
The law minister said the penal code and the cyber crime act would be amended with incorporating harsher punishment for hurting the religious sentiments.
Two cyber crimes tribunals –- one in Dhaka and the other in Chittagong — have already been formed to try cyber crimes, he said, adding that a judge has also been appointed to the tribunal in Dhaka.
The home minister said two Alems (Islamic scholars) will be included in the committee formed to identify and take action against those who post offensive statements against Islam and Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) on blogs and social sites.
The government formed the committee on March 13.
About recent shutdowns enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance, MK Alamgir said those were not peaceful as the opposition activists torched vehicles, unleashed vandalism, killed and injured people, including policemen.
