BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will announce the opposition’s final agitation programmes from the October 25 rally to be in the capital to force the government to hold the next general election under a non-party government.

Revealing this, BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday said if the government wants to hold the polls under its own arrangements keeping parliament in place, it will have to face dire consequences.

“We’ll have no alternative to announcing programmes. If any anarchic situation is created during the October 25 rally, the government will have to bear the responsibility,” he said while addressing the closing ceremony of the 24th Bangladesh Apparel & Textile Exposition (Batexpo-2013) at Hotel Sonargaon in the city.

The BNP leader claimed that BNP chief Khaleda kept the garment industry outside the purview of each hartal in the past.

Saying they observed all their democratic programmes in the past peacefully, he assured that the October 25 rally will also be peaceful.

Mosharraf, however, alleged that Awami League deliberately called a counter rally in the capital for October 25 to create instability.

He said they will remain aware so that their political programmes do not adversely affect the garment sector. “I’ll like to tell foreign investors that there’s nothing for you to be worried. Our political programmes won’t leave any adverse impact on the garment sector. You can invest without any fear.”

BNP chairperson’s advisers Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Dr Osman Faruk, and President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Atiqul Islam also spoke at the function.

US Ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena, former commerce adviser Barkat Ullah Bulu, former FBCCI president Abdul Awal Mintu and Independent MP Fazlul Azim, among others, were present.
