BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has threatened to paralyse the country by enforcing non-stop hartals and road and railway blockade if the government does not restore caretaker government system.
She said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has to accept the demand or she has to quit power.
“We will enforce non-stop hartals and blockade after holding rallies in divisional cities,” the leader of the opposition in parliament said while addressing a rally in Narsingdi Sunday afternoon.
The BNP chief said they would not allow the government to hold one-party election.
“We have said categorically that we will not join any election under a political government,” she said. “It does not mean that Hasina will hold a one-party election and we will allow it.”
Khaleda said political parties apart from those in the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance also want the caretaker system back for holding the election.
“Dr Kamal Hossain, Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and Quader Siddiqui want the restoration of the caretaker system,” said the leader of the opposition in parliament.
Referring to an opinion poll conducted by the Bangla daily Prothom Alo, she said 90 percent of people were in favour of caretaker system. “The number no has probably been 98 percent.”
Blasting the premier for abolishing the caretaker government system “in the name of implementing the court verdict”, Khaleda said she brought changes to the constitution to stay in power for ever.
