Dhaka, Nov 19 (bdnews24.com)—BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday sought one more chance to govern and pledged to change the face of the country through massive development.
“We want one more chance and support from the people. I’ll change the face of the country and present Bangladesh before the world as a model country,” the opposition chief told a public rally at Bangabandhu Park in Barisal divisional headquarters.
The former Prime Minister also pledged to ensure good governance and purge the administration of corruption.
The BNP-led 18-Party Alliance organised the rally demanding restoration of the non-party caretaker government system to oversee the next general elections.
Thousands of BNP leaders, activists and supporters from different upazilas of Barisal district and its neighbouring Patuakhali, Barguna, Pirojpur and Jhalokathi districts joined the rally. The rally ground turned into a human sea by 3pm.
Addressing the people, Khaleda said: “In these last days of my life, I’ve nothing to ask or achieve. I want to do something for the people. If I fail to change the face of the country, I’m ready to accept any punishment you (people) will hand me.”
The BNP chief also urged the allies of the ruling Awami League to break away from the Grand Alliance.
Khaleda had addressed any big rally at Bangabandhu Park (Bell’s Park) for the last time on May 12, 2010.
In her 40-minute-long speech, she referred to the current state of things, the government’s ‘failure’, ‘misrule and ‘terrorism’ by the Awami League’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Khaleda renewed her party’s demand for restoring caretaker government system and warned that no other formula that the government may try will work.
The opposition leader said that no election would be allowed to take place under the party-backed government.
She termed the BNP as a ‘pro-Liberation War force’ and called on all to come forward to execute the spirits of the independence struggle.
Khaleda also promised to change the country in a massive way through development both in urban and rural areas if her party won the mandate.
“We’ll not discriminate against any party or religion. We’ll create employment opportunities by increasing the foreign investment and ensuring all the facilities including the power and gas connections,” she added.
