The opposition leader Khaleda Zia has replied to the letter the US Secretary of State John Kerry had sent to her pressing for a dialogue among political parties.
BNP’s Vice Chairman Shamsher Mubin Chowdhury confirmed on Thursday that the reply was sent on Wednesday.
“A reply has been sent to the letter the US Secretary of State had written to the opposition leader conveying his concerns over the uncertainty centering the next election.”
“The opposition leader herself has written the letter to the Secretary of State,” Chowdhury told bdnews24.com.
“The opposition leader has stated in the letter that the people of Bangladesh are equally concerned and uncertain about the election just like the world leader (Kerry).”
“She (the opposition leader) believes the only way to resolve the existing crisis is through a meaningful dialogue.”
The fate of such a dialogue rests on the goodwill of the government, said the letter.
“The United Nation had initiated a move (in this regard) in the past. BNP will respond to any such move if taken now,” said Chowdhury, a former Foreign Secretary.
On Sept 7, Kerry wrote separate letters to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the opposition leader Khaleda Zia for arranging dialogues among political parties.
The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had telephone conversations with the two leaders on the same issue earlier.
The opposition BNP has objections to holding national election between the constitutionally-bound period between Oct 28 to Jan 24, 2014 without having a caretaker government to oversee the polls.
The government dissolved the caretaker government system following the 15th constitutional amendment. The BNP has been demanding that the system be brought back for holding a national election participated by all political parties.
