Khaleda knew about Aug 17 serial bombing: Ashraf

“She not only knew about it but also provided assistance to the attackers,” the ruling Awami League’s general secretary alleged on Sunday.

Syed Ashraf, also the LGRD and Cooperatives Minister, came up with the contention at a discussion organised in Dhaka to mark the ninth anniversary of the incident.

Militant organisation Jaama’atul Mujaheedin, Bangladesh (JMB) detonated a series of bombs across the country on this day in 2005 when the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition was in power.

The JMB was eventually banned and its top brass was hanged.

Khaleda was the prime minister at that time.

At the discussion organised by the Dhaka Metropolitan unit of the Awami League, Ashraf claimed the BNP chief “assisted” in the attack “to create a militant group like the al-Qaeda and Taliban” in Bangladesh.

“Khaleda Zia was the then prime minister and we have proof that she provided full assistance to the attackers,” the minister further insisted.
