Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Wednesday said that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia is the biggest beneficiary of the killing of her husband Ziaur Rahman.
“It was said that Khaleda (Zia) had not been in good term with her husband Ziaur Rahman. She didn’t initiate trial of the (Zia) killing while she was in power. Khaleda Zia is the biggest beneficiary of the killing of her husband Ziaur Rahman,” he said at a press conference at Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
About BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s statement that they would initiate fresh investigation into the killing of Ziaur Rahman, Hanif said people of the country don’t believe this.
He said: “In 1991, by taking floor on point-of-order in the Jatiya Sangsad, Matia Chowdhury spoke about filing case into the killing of Ziaur Rahman. In reply, Khaleda Zia had said if you have evidence, you can file case.”
“Through this comment, it was proved that BNP doesn’t want the trial into the killing of Ziaur Rahman,” added the AL joint general secretary.
At a press conference on Tuesday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said they would launch a fresh and all-out investigation into the killing of Ziaur Rahman if BNP returns to power.
Hanif came down hard on BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman for ‘distorting’ country’s history of Liberation War.
“Tarique Rahman is involved in conspiracy against the country by leading a lavish life aboard through siphoned-off money,” he said.
Awami League joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, organising secretaries Ahmed Hossain, BM Mozammel Haque and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, and office secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap were present at the press conference.
