International Crimes Tribunal-1 chairman Justice Nizamul Huq Nasim has stepped down following publication of his Skype conversation with an expatriate jurist on the tribunal activities.
Confirming the resignation to The Daily Star Tuesday afternoon, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said, “His resignation will not hamper the trial procedure of the war criminals.”
“We hope the government will appoint a new judge for his replacement by Wednesday,” he said, adding that he will now get back to the office of a High Court judge.
On Monday, lawyers loyal to the main opposition BNP and its close ally Jamaat-e-Islami demanded his resignation for what they said his “misconduct” by reportedly holding Skype conversations with a Bangladeshi expatriate about the trial proceedings.
The demands were made after a Bangla national daily on December 9 and 10 published two reports on the reported Skype conversations between Justice Nizamul and several persons including one Ziauddin Ahmed, an international criminal law expert, living in Belgium
